Product Description
Get ready to teach your students more about poetry than they (or you) ever thought possible! This comprehensive, 51-slide PowerPoint is the result of nearly a decade of refinement in my 10th-grade classroom. It begins WAY at the beginning with an analogy between the linguistic achievement of a good poem and the athletic achievement of a slam dunk (bring your own highlight reel for maximum effectiveness). It proceeds through a lengthy study of the genre that lasts five to six weeks in my class when paired with a healthy sampling of your choice of poems and practice exercises (not included, but look elsewhere in my store for various poetry practice worksheets). The unit is organized according to "conventions of form" (lines, meter, and rhyme) and "conventions of language" (imagery, sound devices, and other poetic devices) with an additional section on sub-genres of poetry. Excerpted examples abound from Robert Frost to BEAUTY AND THE BEAST to HAMILTON. Fully editable, so you can tailor the explanations and examples to your liking. Also includes my notes in the "notes" section of selected slides to guide you through. Text is set to appear point by point as you click. Download this product today and introduce your kids to poetry! (NOTE: Preview file contains a sampling of 10 mostly non-sequential slides. Actual product contains 51 slides.)

Terms covered: end-stopped line, enjambment, caesura (soft/hard), stanza, couplet, quatrain, meter, metric feet, iamb, trochee, anapest, scansion, metric substitution, free verse, rhyme (masculine/feminine, end/internal, slant, eye, mosaic), imagery (visual/auditory/tactile/olfactory/gustatory), alliteration, consonance, assonance, onomatopoeia, lyric poetry, ballad, light verse, dramatic monologue, sonnet (Shakespearean/Petrarchan)
