Have you ever thought about how the toys you played with as a kid and teen influenced how you developed? Despite controversy surrounding the issue, many psychologists and toy manufacturers are now researching and producing toys with that question in mind. These researchers claim that toys often limit the mindsets of kids in terms of what they believe boys and girls can and should do. In this lesson/project students will explore this controversy and create a radio show on the topic in which they use a free online audio recording program. Your students will love this fun project!
During this lesson, students will:
1) Respond to a Bell Ringer in which they describe their favorite childhood toy and explain why it was.
2) Participate in a Photo Gallery Activity in which students analyze toy ads for promoting subliminal gender roles.
3) Listen to an online audio recording about the gender role controversy consuming the Legos company and answer questions based off of the recording.
4) Create in groups an online radio show demonstrating their understanding of the impact certain toys have on gender roles.
