Product Description

I use this graphic organizer to help breakdown successful rhetoric in speeches/non fiction. In 9th grade, we fill it out together as we do a close reading, in AP Lang, it is simply a notetaking aid. Students are already familiar with the 5 w's, so using them for rhetoric helps them analyze a topic they sometimes find complex or hard to approach. I've use it for the Gettysburg address, Emma Watson's "HeForShe" speech, and also, in a sort of modified way, for Sherman Alexie's "Superman and Me" personal narrative. The fill-in-the-blank thesis at the bottom helps students get into the habit of writing detailed, structured thesis statements at the beginning of a rhetorical analysis essay. In AP, they will need to do this on the College Board's exam at the end of the course.
