In this worksheet, students will identify themselves according to different categories (race, religion, age, education, ethnicity, able/disabled, sexuality, gender, social class, education). For each category, they will not only identify what they are, but will answer whether that makes them a minority in America and also the world. In order to find this out, students will need access to the internet (if this is an in-class activity) or they'll need internet at home to do it as homework. This can be an eye-opening exercise for students to think about how identity affects our lives, and also how privileged they may be. They will answer a couple of questions at the end that summarize their findings and asks them to reflect on their answers. This is a great activity to do in the early stages of a sociology class because it introduces so many topics and opens up a wide area for discussion and/or exploration.
