Product Description
Want to crash course secondary students on the concept of utopia/dystopia? Frontloading a novel unit and building background knowledge about the genre?

Use the lesson and follow-up project to teach…
• WHAT a symbol is,
• How colors, weather, and other items can be symbolic,
• How to determine if something is a symbol,
• How to “track” it in a novel, and
• How to carefully write about symbolism in literary analysis.

After you teach the one-day lesson, apply the “Symbolism Quest” small-group project to ANY text to help students collaboratively find evidence and draw conclusions about symbolism in your novel.

(NOTE: The project is currently based on The Giver, which is how I teach it, BUT the EDITABLE file can be quickly adapted to your novel with only a few, minor edits!)

This 20-page/slide, EDITABLE download includes…
• A brief Teacher’s Guide
• PowerPoint slides: the lesson itself
• Guided notes for students
• Answer key for the guided notes
• Symbolism Quest (small-group project)
• BONUS: The 10-minute video of ME teaching the lesson, so you get ideas of what you can discuss while teaching it yourself. (Or, you can assign the video lesson to students to just watch that, flipped classroom style.)

NOTE: This product is INCLUDED in my full The Giver Novel Unit!
