Symbols and symbolism are a critical component of complex literature, poetry, and art. This PowerPoint can be used as a brief, or detailed, introduction to identifying and thinking about (or analyzing) symbols in poetry. It is simplistic in design to emphasize student discussion - the teacher acts as the facilitator and will step in to guide the students to appropriate responses.
The PowerPoint uses popular song lyrics to connect to the students to show that symbolism is still current. This powerpoint can be adapted for poetry or expanded upon for more critical thinking, including having students generate a list of symbols that represent them and/or writing a poem using those symbols.
Lesson outline and notes are in the notes of the PowerPoint. Different options for teaching styles are included, as well as different ways to differentiate the instruction. The PowerPoint has been left as editable so that you can customize it to your teaching style and students needs. Enjoy!
