I use this powerpoint like a trivia game - it makes for an exciting introduction to the study of a world language. Every other slide has the students guessing - How many countries have Spanish as an official language? How many countries have English? How many languages are spoken in the world today? What are the top 5 most spoken languages? Why are some languages dying out - and what causes this? Why should we study a language?
I have had huge success with this lesson 3 years in both middle and high school - the students remain super engaged, surprised at the crazy facts they had never learned, and excited when they guess things correctly.
I give the students a blank world map, south america map, and central america map to fill in as we go, and have them jot down their guesses and the actual facts in their journals.
