Intro to Yogalore/My Daddy Is a Pretzel: Yoga & Movement Pose Cards

If you are looking for a way to introduce yoga to your classroom but aren't sure how, this yoga pose deck is a great way to get you started! Designed to follow along with My Daddy Is a Pretzel by Baron Baptiste, this colorful pose and movement card deck will keep your students focused and attentive while encouraging movement. Poses from the My Daddy Is a Pretzel are in the pose and movement deck, but also quite a few of the basic poses I use in my Yogalore classes are included.

In his book, Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul, Stuart Brown, M.D. states, “Movement play lights up the brain and fosters learning, innovation, flexibility, adaptability, and resilience. These central aspects of human nature require movement to be fully realized.” Movement (including yoga) can actually help children learn.

This pose card deck also includes 4 blank pose cards (on one page, so you can print as many as you need). Children love creating their own yoga/movement poses. This is a really fun activity whether you use it as an individual, small group, or entire class activity. They can draw their own yoga poses, or write a description (for older children), and then can present the poses to the class. My students LOVE developing their own poses and coming up with names for their poses!!!

You do not have to have prior yoga experience to use these pose cards! So many children and adults insist they cannot "do yoga" because they "aren't flexible". That's exactly why we practice yoga -- the more we practice, the more flexible we become over time. We can only do our best! This activity is about having fun while learning. Don't worry about a child not doing a pose "correctly" (taking safety into consideration of course). We want to foster a lifelong love of yoga and healthy habits, which means we want to encourage a positive experience.

This pose deck can be used as a stand alone activity or as a supplement to an existing lesson plan.

Other Uses:
1. For physical activity on a rainy or inclement day
2. As a break between tests or focused activity
3. As a focusing activity prior to testing
4. Time filler between activities

5. A lesson plan for a substitute

6. A "just in case" activity to have on hand

7. For a class-motivating activity; end-of-the-day activity
8. Homeschooling

9. For a more one-on-one activity, in a therapeutic setting
10. As a family activity to do at home

Yoga has so many benefits, including but not limited to:
Relaxes and alleviates stress
Builds self-confidence
Increases physical activity
Builds strength balance and coordination
Ability to focus

Increases body awareness

Included in this pose deck:
1 cover card
1 instruction card
1 card listing the components of Yogalore
1 lesson plan card
26 pose cards with photos of actual children doing the yoga poses
1 partner pose card
3 cards separating sections
1 card with sensory activity (simple pretzel recipe)
1 guided visualization card

1 group activity card
4 blank pose cards
40 cards total (10 pages, 4 cards to a page)

Ways To Organize:
Keep them uncut and put in sheet protectors (this is what I do -- I print 16 on a page and use them at-a-glance during my classes)
cut and put in a recipe-type storage box
cut and put on a ring for easy access and usage
cut and laminate for durability
download and keep on tablet or mobile device -- I have a friend who uses the cards on her tablet hooked up to a TV and the kids love it

About design and printing:
These cards were designed to be postcard size (4.25" x 5.5"), to fit four cards on a standard 8 1/2" x 11" sheet. To do this click on "more settings", then "multiple", and "4" from the drop-down menu. You can also print more or less on a page based on that drop-down menu and the small preview screen will show you what it will look like. I print my cards on white cardstock and have been very happy with the results.
