Ths is one of my students' favorite assignments!
Every year, students prepare themselves to return to school and write at least one introduction essay for their class(es), and this tired assignment really does little to reveal our students to us. If the purpose is to get to know your students better (and perhaps let them have fun in the process), this assignment gets the job done.
Using their own cell phones or any device that can take video, students will create intorduction videos that can be as simple or as complex as their personal skills will allow. These do not need to be edited, but if students wish to do it, there are plenty of free apps and online programs that they can utilize. If not, just one solid stream of video is OK too.
The assignment culminates in a Film Festival where everyone can get to know each other in a fun way, and I give out some prizes at the end (also listed on the assignment).
I assign this on the first day and show one I made for myself on my smartphone, then I give them 1 week to finish it. They are given a little time in class to film their school portion of the video or edit, but in this day and age of technology, it isn't something that tech natives need a lot of class time to do.
