This document is a 9-page introductory lesson to affixes and why learning them is so important, as well as how when you know the meaning of one, you know the meaning of many words! This lesson is essentially a script for the teacher and tells various stories about specific kids in your class. Because specific kids' names are used, they are instantly engaged; students always get excited by this lesson - especially when I challenge them in the beginning - telling them they are going to learn 100 words by the end of the hour! They don't believe it, and so they try to prove me wrong! This lesson always excites my students - and is somewhat humorous, too - and even ends with a three-minute clip of a recent movie that focuses on "smaller words" making "big words". I use affixes such as rhin-, saurus-, phobia, -itis, -scope, bronto-, etc. - but, ultimately, I teach this lesson and then go on to teach the affixes required by my state's standardized test.
