Product Description
This is a fun, highly-engaging activity that I use to introduce the S.T.E.A.L. chart for determining a character's traits. Students analyze two fictional online dating profiles to determine whether or not the characters are suitable dates. Using the STEAL chart students look for examples of each potential date's Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, and Looks in order to make inferences about their traits. Students must give a final opinion of both potential dates that summarizes their character traits and provides textual support.

My students have always thoroughly enjoyed this activity, because it calls on them to use an academic skill in a "real world" context. It also gives them a useful framework for determining character traits in literature. S.T.E.A.L. is a method that I use throughout the entire year, and this is such a fun way to introduce it.

**Note: I'm delighted that so many teachers have downloaded this activity! If you've used it, please come back and leave a comment/rating to let me know how it went over.
