This 16 slide PowerPoint presentation serves as the introduction to our unit on Fractions. It is primarily an overview of the vocabulary needed to understand fractions. Definitions and illustrations are used to introduce the following vocabulary:
• Proper Fraction
• Improper Fraction
• Mixed Numbers
• Equivalent Fractions
• Simplest form of a Fraction
In our classroom, we use this presentation as the visual students use to add new vocabulary to their Math Notebooks. Students are provided with a copy of some of the slides to affix to their Math Notebooks. As we work through each slide, students highlight important information and copy notes we add to individual slides, so that their Math Notebook becomes a valuable resource for students to refer to throughout the unit.
It is used as an introduction for students in Grade 3 and as a review for students in Grade 4. After viewing the PowerPoint, we then begin the work of addressing each of the skills necessary to become proficient when working with fractions.
