Literary criticism is not part of every high school English curriculum, so it can be hard to find high-quality resources for introducing these complicated concepts to students. For this reason, I started making my own resources. That’s how this set was born: a think sheet I use to introduce the concept of literary criticism, a notes page to guide students through the basics of historical and biographical criticism, and an application of these lenses to poem. As a TPT exclusive, I also included a list of texts that lend themselves to historical and biographical criticism. While I do not score or grade any of these items in my own classroom, I have included answer keys, but some of the questions will have varied answers. I hope you enjoy using these resources! Please let me know what other types of resources can help us introduce literary criticism in high school classrooms.
