When I was teaching the skill of making inferences, I found it necessary to have an activity that structures the thought process behind it. I used the first part of this two page packet as a brief mini-lesson that was revisiting what I had taught a previous day. It could also be used as a starter to the unit of making inferences.
I would use the second part of the handouts a few times a month. The routine I developed consisted of my dispensing a text, (or the students choosing a novel from the library),to my class and they using a fresh copy of the handout to complete. After the students read silently for a given amount time, they complete the handout. Students volunteer to share their results aloud as a class. I was then able to guide my students' understanding and application of the skill.
