Introducing Signposts with Mentor Texts

Rationale: As educators, we want our students to become curious readers and independent thinkers. Introducing signposts as a reading strategy is an effective way to teach students how find meaningful passages and analyze them in meaningful ways.

Ever since I have begun using signposts in my classroom, I have found that they allow for much more organic discussions. As students move past the signpost identification phase, they begin demonstrating stronger analysis and generate their own text-based inferences, predictions and questions.

In this bundle, students will read passages from Hatchet along with a teacher-led think-aloud. Modeling this metacognition shows students what it means to be aware of your own thoughts as you read. As students practice this skill themselves, their analysis will deepen and you will be thrilled with the discussions that take place in your classroom!

• Again and Again
• Aha Moment
• Memory Moment

• Tough Question
• Contrast and Contradiction

This bundle can be used alongside Hatchet as a class novel, or used to introduce the signposts as students apply them to their own independent reading books.

After each think-aloud, students are either:

•provided with another example of another signpost moment and must annotate the text to demonstrate their own thinking.
•provided with text-based questions to reinforce the significance of the signpost.
