This is a great common core aligned lesson plan to introduce ANY book to your class!

ALIGNED STANDARDS:
RL.2.1    
RL.2.7    
RL.3.7    

MATERIALS:
-This "Investigation" handout
-Book you want to introduce-- e.g. James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
-Any items that are related to the book for group work-- e.g. Peach, plastic insect toys (spiders, grasshoppers, ladybugs, etc.), envelope of “magic beans” a.k.a. dried beans, map of New York City and/or London, picture of Cinderella.

PROCEDURE:
Preparation:  
-Gather items related to the book that represent the story-- props, maps, etc.  
-Arrange desks into groups-- as many groups as there are story items.        

Entire class work:
-Introduce the 5 W questions - Who, What, When, Where, Why and discuss why these are important questions that help with understanding a story.
-Discuss a related story– For the James and the Giant Peach example, discuss what happens in the story Cinderella or Jack and the Beanstalk.

Group work:
-Put students into groups, as many groups as there are story items.
-Let students examine each item and then come up with an idea of how this item could fit into a story. 

Individual work:
-Once groups have visited every item, students can return to his/her desk.  
-Each student should answer the 5 W questions about his/her story predictions.    
-Each student can draw a picture of his/her predictions.
