PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

How do you get your students to master Common Core standards while still adjusting to them yourself, particularly with such tight adoption deadlines?

One answer, at least for this teacher/pupil, is to teach the standards themselves. Clearly defining for students upfront what is expected of them, the skills they need to demonstrate to get to the next step in the educational staircase, and then connecting those expectations to the material studied, brings immediate relevancy to the classroom. It engenders a culture of high expectations, prepares students for standardized tests, AND answers the age-old question of high schoolers everywhere: "Why do I need to learn this?"

But simply providing a list of standards to students is not enough. The students must make sense of them in their own terms in order to be meaningful.

A resource for both teachers and students, "Introducing the Common Core to High School Students" includes printables and lesson ideas that can bring the standards to life. Using two-column graphic organizers, students can read the standards as written by the authors "in their words," then rewrite them "in my words," in a way that is meaningful to each individual. In this way, they will better understand and connect to the skills they will need to master in reading, writing, listening/speaking and language.

HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE
The Common Core graphic organizers can be printed and distributed to students at the beginning of the year, at the launch of a new unit, or whenever you see fit. Students can refer to them throughout the year, as new standards, units and lessons are introduced. "Introducing Common Core" also includes a variety of lesson ideas and activities, including:

-Before and After: students rate their own skill with a particular standard before and after a unit to monitor their own growth

-Class Consensus: students work in pairs or small groups to create their own description of each standard. This is followed by a discussion in which the class agrees upon a final definition.

-Teacher Report Card: students provide you with a grade based on their learning of each standard.

Additionally, you will find this resource a valuable tool when planning your curriculum, designing your unit and lesson plans, formulating test-prep strategies and tests, and further familiarizing yourself with the standards themselves. You may use it to unlock "the big ideas" and shape your guiding questions as well as identify where, when and how to cover and assess each standard in your yearly plan.
