This is a great beginning-of-the-year assignment! It requires students to put themselves "in someone else's shoes," as they write about themselves in a third-person perspective (which can be very difficult, for some students). Each student is pretending to be their teacher from last year, writing about their OWN strengths and weaknesses.
Some key discussion topics for this assignment are: PERSPECTIVE/POINT OF VIEW, AUDIENCE, TOPIC, and AUTHOR'S PURPOSE. It is an excellent segue into the letter-writing format, and it also gives the teacher an idea of his/her students' abilities and personalities.
