Picture books are a great way to introduce your students to a new topic. This packet includes strategies for using picture books with older students and a guide to selecting good books. The packet also includes a list of books that can be used when introducing different forms of government to your classroom. The narrative style, selective vocabulary and real world setting of the books help students begin to understand the differences between some of the kinds of government that are ruling countries around the world.
The list of books also contains a short synopsis of each story to help teachers select books.
Using picture books as an added strategy for teaching middle and high school ELL students has been the focus of a pilot program that showed 30% student growth in understanding social studies topics.
These books can be adapted for use in grades 4-12.
