Have you purcahsed or are considering purchasing a 3D printer and don’t know where to start? This resource is perfect for classrooms just starting out in the world of 3D imaging and provides you with everything you need to teach the fundamentals of 3D printing.

This STEAM project is broken up into two parts:

BUILDING BACKGROUND

Your kiddos will begin by doing a research project of the history, current uses, benefits, and future innovcations of 3D printing. Graphic organizers are provided to assist students with their research, as well as a scoring rubric to assess students’ final products.

3D PRINTING CHALLENGE

Next, kiddos will explore Tinkercad as they complete a series of modules to learn all the mechanics and tools needed to build 3D images. A scoring rubric and checklist are provided to help students stay on track and for you to monitor their learning.

This resource includes…

  • Detailed Lesson Plans
  • Research Graphic Organizers
  • Research Project Scoring Guide
  • 3D Challenge Check Sheet
  • Pictures of Student Work Samples
  • Student Self-Assessment
  • Teacher Scoring Rubric

If you are still on the fence about 3D printing, think about these benefits:

  • Kiddos become inventors who identify and find solutions to everyday problems.
  • Easy to meet the needs of all learners because it is self-paced, provides student choice, and the content can be adjusted based on the readiness of your students.
  • Combines technology and art so students can create their own innovative and unique designs
  • Even the most reluctant learners will be excited to print their own creations.
  • Amazing hands-on way to connect students to what they are learning! For example students can create their own math manipulatives, design tools to solve problems that Phillip faced in The Cay, or even make models of landmarks travelers visited while traveling on the Oregon Trail.

NGSS3-5-ETS1-2
Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-1
Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
Write routinely over extended time frames (time for reflection and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.
