When teaching my students to be active readers, I introduce the concept of "spy codes!" Spy codes are essentially reading strategies. There are a number of fun (small boxes) with a picture and a stem of some sort. Some examples include: I wonder..., One new important character is...he/she is important because... You can then use the pictures and blow them up to place on pieces of chart paper for mini-lessons. I have also laminated these and students use overhead markers for a show-and-tell example.
