This is an introductory class activity to characterization. I typed a school appropriate version of the "Alligator River Problem".
MY STUDENTS LOVE THIS ACTIVITY. First, give everyone a copy of the story. They read it and on a blank sheet of paper, they rank the characters in order of morality. They have to have a defense as to why they placed each character where they did. They then move into groups and then we discuss it as a class. Some of the arguments get heated, but in a fun way!
When we talk about characterization next, I use their examples from this activity and it helps them make the connection.
