In this lesson plan, you will find an introductory lesson to context clues that will teach students how to use clues to figure out unfamiliar words. I have included detailed plans as well as all the worksheets and tools needed to complete the lesson.
The lesson begins with students trying to figure out 7 unfamiliar words. The teacher then introduces the different context clue types (definition, synonym, antonym, example, inference, similar word, and word parts). I have included a context clues reference chart for students to utilize not only in this lesson, but as an all year reference tool.
Next, through a group activity, students will write their own context clue sentences. They will make up their own words and write sentences using each type of context clue. The groups will exchange sentences and try to figure out the newly created words.
Finally, you will find an individual context clue practice sheet with 20 sentences.
This is a fun and engaging lesson that will help students become very familiar with the types of context clues. This lesson is brought to you by The Learning Loft.
