These Common Core (English 11-12) aligned journals are a great way to get students to begin to write creatively and practice narrative techniques. While I have used these with advanced writers who love the challenge, it’s the reluctant, beginning writers who benefit most from these idea generators. Those who “hate to write” are often times surprised just how much they enjoyed writing for these prompts, and they are amazed at just how much they actually wrote. These activities can be used at the beginning of a creative writing class, or they can be used to introduce a narrative writing unit (whether it be story writing, memoir or narrative poetry).
Time: Some of these journals can take up to a traditional class period (45-50 minutes), but many can be adapted or segmented to take just ten minutes.
Note: These activities can be adapted and customized to fit standards for lower grades.
