BUILDING SKILLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Everywhere you look educators are talking about preparing students for the 21st century. High on everyone’s priority list is preparing students to become problem solvers, which involves both critical thinking and creative thinking. This type of problem solving is not limited to mathematics; rather, it is a broad concept that involves the ability to work through a variety of complex situations. Yet students seldom receive any direct instruction on how to solve problems in these
broad contexts. The activities in this course are an outgrowth of the Future Problem Solving Program International, a competitive program for students all over the world that was begun in 1974 by E. Paul Torrance, a pioneer in creativity.
