Expressing and Defending Opinions
Cooperative Learning Activity
(Introduction to Presentation and Debates)
If your students have never done a debate or need work on giving a presentation, this is an excellent workshop for them. It is designed to help students better express and defend their personal opinions. It is an excellent introduction to formal debates and giving presentations.. It takes about two days and my students love it.
Students participate in cooperative learning groups where they complete a worksheet which contains nine controversial issues. The group must write their opinions on each issue, support each with at least two solid reasons, and then think of a couple of questions to ask other groups.
Next. each group chooses an issue and participates in another cooperative learning activity where the whole class shares and brainstorms ideas for presentation and debates. In the culminating activity, each group must either do a presentation on or debate another group .
