This student project document provides students with an environmental engineering design challenge- designing a water filter. Beginning with an introduction to environmental engineering and the engineering design process, students are then introduced to the design challenge. Through a series of scaffolded questions, students are led through the steps of ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve.
This project takes 4-5 days if each day focuses on one step in the engineering design process. (Imagine and plan can be combined into one day as well.)
The following NGSS Science and Engineering Practices are focused on for this project:
-Asking questions and defining problems
-Developing and using models
-Constructing explanations and designing solutions (for engineering)
-Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
NGSS MS-LS2-5 Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services.
This can be used as an individual or group project, or a performance assessment. The document is editable in order to best meet the needs of you and your students! Rubric is included.
