Evolution - one of my favorite units of the year! Before I push my students into the deep waters of natural selection, adaptations, variation, and inheritance I have them engage in reading through this powerpoint. This powerpoint explains the concepts of evolution, natural selection, and extinction. This powerpoint also builds my students' background knowledge by providing and explaining two real world examples of evolution in action!
Ask your students to brainstorm other real world examples as an exit ticket. Have students think-pair-share the definition of evolution in their own words! The possibilities of learning activities are endless. The goal is to make sure students understand what evolution is, so when you start talking about rare genetic mutations that altered the structure and function of proteins in an organism leading to variation of predominant and suppressed traits in a population your students will have some semblance of what it is you're ramblin' on about. :)
