This introduction to experimental design resource helps students learn how to design their own experiments. The resource provides explanations for the different components of a scientific experiment as well as opportunities to practice developing those components (ex: variables, hypothesis, making data tables, etc. - see the preview for specifics.)

Once students have learned the ins and outs of experimental design, they will design their own experiments about consumer products using the design templates included. They will ask a testable question about a product claim, for example, design an experiment to test that question, and conduct their experiment.

The idea is to set students up for scientific open-inquiry - designing and leading their own scientific experiments. A scientific inquiry like this, conducting experiments, is a theme throughout the NGSS standards. Teaching students how to design their own experiments will prepare them to meet these standards.

Self-directed experimentation promotes higher-order thinking, problem-solving, critical thinking, independent learning, communication, collaboration, and lifelong learning, among other important skills.

Elements of design in this resource include:

  • Brainstorming
  • Observations
  • Asking a testable question
  • Independent, dependent, and control variables
  • Hypothesis
  • Data collection
  • Creating graphs
  • Analyzing results
  • Writing conclusions
  • NOTE: This resource does not dive deeply into statistical analysis. It is an introduction to experimental design, touching the surface of each element listed above.

What is Included:

  • Experimental design instructions
  • Practice scenarios
  • Student-led experimental design templates
