This Introduction to Fiction unit was created for high school ELL students (Levels 1-3) but could easily be used in your late elementary or junior high ELA class. This unit is complete with guided notes (including colour coding to indicate important words), student-made dictionary of fiction words, and small graphic organiser assignments on setting, character, narrator, plot, conflict and theme. All you need is a selection of short stories appropriate for the students in your class and you have a 2-3 week introduction to fiction unit all set up.
I suggest putting the students into groups in order to complete these activities (by reading level – so they can read the same stories). You can use the same story throughout the unit or use multiple stories for more of a challenge. Once students have completed these assignments, you can complete a final assessment asking students to make their own story or reading a whole new story and talking or writing about it to solidify knowledge.
Please note: There are many “literature” words in this unit that are difficult for ELL students but important words to know. In many cases, they are explained in the notes but in some cases you may have to supplement by describing or defining words as you go based upon the needs of your particular students.
