This is a smartboard presentation that highlights the key aspects of Gamelan Music. I have developed this for a primary world music project and I have hired in a "chamber Gamelan" that uses a selection of instruments, so the list of instruments on here is not exhaustive. I have included lots of opportunities for paired and shared discussion and I have brought the presentation to life by embedding videos of Gamelan performance, the making of the Gamelan and a video clip showing the famous Shadow Puppetry of Indonesia. The children are asked to compare and contrast Gamelan traditions with those of a Western Orchestra. By the end of the session the children will be able to talk about the main characteristics of Gamelan and locate the main sounds associated with it prior to beginning their practical work. All photographs used here have creative commons licences, and the authors of the YouTube material have granted their permission to share the work by posting imbed codes to their posts. All links to my sources can be found at the end of the smartboard presentation.
