This complete lesson provides introductory-level biology students with an overview of three major gene technologies, gene splicing, gel electrophoresis, and polymerase chain reaction. For each technology, students will be able to explain what the technology is, why it is used, and how it is performed. For gene splicing and gel electrophoresis, diagrams are used to clarify the techniques. For PCR, a link to an educational game is provided that will provide the details of PCR in a fun, engaging format. The lesson includes a Crime Scene Investigation-style constructed response question that can be used as an extension or exit ticket activity. The lesson may be completed through direct instruction, individual work, or group collaboration.
