This activity works for any language that shares cognates with English.
I like to start the year off with this activity, which is why I paired it with learning the alphabet. It really lowers the stress of learning a new language by showing students that it won't all be hard, and that they carry a lot of knowledge about language already.
This package comes with three activities:
1. Reading: Scanning a French dictionary for cognates.
2. Writing: Spelling out each cognate with the pronunciation of each letter. In English spelling out cat would be "see ay tee"
3. Listening/speaking: Students each choose one cognate that they found, and read it out to the class in French letter by letter, while the rest of the class writes it down.
With one activity, I now have a grade for each mode of communication!
This activity is uploaded in an editable Word doc and in a PDF.
