In this article, students will explore the scientific classification system as well as cladograms and phylogenetic trees. Students will be introduced to taxonomy, binomial nomenclature, and the basics of relatedness between organisms. Embedded questions will probe students to find these patterns of relatedness throughout the article, with the summary questions focusing on reading/making cladograms and phylogenetic trees, as well as drawing important conclusions from the data. This article can be used in support of Tennessee State Science Standard 8.LS4.2, but is best as an introductory article. Any state that uses NGSS will also find support with this information.
