This lesson invites senior-level secondary school students to discover literary theory through three major lenses: theories focused on the Text (formalism, structuralism, poststructuralism), theories focused on the Source (biographical, psychoanalytic, archetypal), and theories focused on the Reader (Reader Response, Feminist, Marxist, New Historicist, Postcolonial). While these theories are not comprehensively explored in this introduction, they are surveyed in relation to a single text: Gwendolyn Brook's poem "First Fight. Then Fiddle." This is an excellent lesson that will save you hours of preparation.
