This Prezi introduces several types of literary criticisms: New Criticism (formalism), New Historicism, Marxism, Reader-Response, Archetypal/mythological, Psychoanalytic, Gender Theory, Feminism, Deconstructionism, Narratology, and Post-Modernism.

For each criticism, a general description or background is given, “Questions a _____ critic might ask” section is given, and an original analysis of the fairy tale Cinderella from that critical lens is given. There are some YouTube videos embedded (CAUTION—The New Criticism video has a cuss word—but you can skip through it or choose not to show that video at all). I have also included optional links to further videos and sites that would be helpful in the presentation. See the preview for some samples.

I have used this with my IB and AP courses to introduce literary theory. The Prezi format is appealing to students.

There is a more in-depth handout that goes with this that you can purchase separately as well, OR, you can buy the bundle of the two of them together and get an editable version of this Prezi.

The Prezi application is free online. You must have an Internet connection to play the YouTube videos. If you aren’t familiar with Prezis, go to and check some out.
