This activity aims to introduce your students to the basics of reading a map, with an emphasis on historical maps. The activity contains three map reading exercises (a U.S. map, a European historical map, and an Eastern Mediterranean trade map). The exercises are scaffolded from basic guided questions to an interpretation of a historical map, and they do not require outside information for completion. There is a culminating group activity that assigns students roles for creating a map of their classroom. It can be a four or six page activity, depending on how you want to use the "Closer Look" pages.
The activity is accompanied with two "Closer Look" slides. The slides allow the teacher to break down the first two map exercises by examining the map features and interpreting historical events. It is animated to allow the teacher a feature-by-feature presentation of the map. These slides can accompany or replace the "Closer Look" pages of the activity.
A key is provided.
