This download includes a PowerPoint presentation of an introduction to literature of the Middle Ages as well as a fun coordinating assignment focused upon creating a symbolic shield.
The PowerPoint presentation provides general information that is necessary for students to have knowledge of about the MIddle Ages time period in preparation for any type of Medieval literature. Various Medieval literature literary techniques are presented with examples, such as kennings and alliteration.
This PowerPoint presentation also includes slides designated specifically to the epic poem Beowulf. Should a different Medieval text need to be used, you can make necessary adjustments or simply not use those slides. (Note: The slides change with a mouse click; formatting was not used for slide changes in order to save time during lecture.)
The fun, creative shield assignment pairs perfectly with this PowerPoint, the Beowulf epic poem, and/or other pieces of literature, such as Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” short story.
Using this shield assignment is a perfect way to help students relate this piece of historical significance - the importance of the shield - to their own lives. This is a great activity for students to learn the extreme importance placed on the family coat of arms. The suggested directions included reference Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado”; however, they may be adapted to the piece of literature being studied.
The shield assignment not only allows for thorough explanation of the importance of the family coat of arms, it allows relates this concept to students’ personal lives. Suggested directions are included that instruct students to create a shield relative to them and also write an essay explaining their shield. MLA format is required in these directions.
