Modern Literature PowerPoint
This PowerPoint has 29 slides and is used in conjunction with lecturing about Modern literature (early 1900s to 1940s). There is also a 1-page Word and PDF document that is an outline for students to fill in the blanks from each slide as the PowerPoint progresses. The outline is a simple way to keep students focused and on track.
Of the 29 slides, 19 of them are pictures from The Great War. I use the pictures to help give the students a sense of the devastation The Great War had on humanity, which helps me teach the concept of disillusionment that is found in the novels of Modernists.
The 3 main points of the PowerPoint are on 1) Disillusionment, 2) The Great Depression, and 3) People's Hope & Dreams.
The authors briefly introduced and discussed are Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Steinbeck. (I only teach a Hemingway and Steinbeck novel during this unit, but I like to include the other authors so my students, at least, hear about Steinbeck and Fitzgerald.)
This lecture/presentation could be completed in a day or in three days, depending on how much information you want to add as you go through the slides.
