In this package you will find a PowerPoint used to introduce multiplication using arrays formed with “happy faces.” The focus is for students to connect the different parts of the arrays with successive addition and multiplication. Each slide is animated and worksheets are included for additional practice and review.
Slides 2 through 21 introduce and/or review the parts of an array and connect then to successive addition and multiplication. Students participate by using thumbs-up or thumbs-down engagement strategy. The development of the vocabulary is critical for the success of English Language Learners, low skill math and Special Education students.
Slides 21 and 22, introduce the concept of multiplication by connecting the visual representation with successive addition and the multiplication factors.
Worksheets: Given a picture, students complete a table by describing the array in words, as a multiplication, successive addition and total number of “happy faces.” (2 pages with answer key) The next six pages, students complete the provided table given words, product or repeated addition. (6 pages with answer key) A template of the table is included for additional practice and review.
As a culminating activity, using a Venn Diagram or Double Bubble, in pairs or groups students compare and contrast 2 x 6 and 6 x 2 using arrays. This activity allows students to develop an in-depth understanding of multiplication and connect what they have learned. An extra Venn Diagram or Double Bubble worksheet, with answer key, is included.
This PowerPoint can be used for instruction, review and/or re-teaching.
