In this package you will find a simple and unique way to introduce the concept of multiplication by asking students to find the number of wheels on vehicles. Each slide is animated and the notes section includes guiding questions and teaching suggestions.
Slides 2 through 6 introduce and/or review the vocabulary and pictures to be used throughout the Power Point and worksheets. This step is critical when working with English Language Learners, low skill math and Special Education students.
Slides 7 and 8, introduce the concept of multiplication by connecting the visual representation with successive addition and the multiplication factors.
Slides 9 to 20, build on the concept developed in slides 7 and 8.
There are two breaks in the PowerPoint for students to work on worksheets in order to solidify, practice and reinforce the concept learned. These are ideal for classwork and/or homework.
Worksheets 1: Given a picture, students complete a table by describing the picture in words, as a multiplication, successive addition and total number of wheels. (3 pages with answer key)
Worksheets 2: Complete the provided table given the picture, words, product or repeated addition. (5 pages with answer key)
As a culminating activity, using a Venn Diagram or Double Bubble, in pairs or groups students compare and contrast 3 x 4 and 4 x 3 using the number of wheels in vehicles. This activity allows students to develop an in-depth understanding of multiplication and connect what they have learned.
This PowerPoint can be used for instruction, review and/or re-teaching.
Included in this package is the Animated PowerPoint (20 slides), a PDF file with a printout of the slides and note section, worksheets and answer keys on Word documents.
The PowerPoint is in show mode and can’t be changed. The Activity Pages and Answer Key are in non-protected Word files to allow teachers to make changes for additional practice, review and/or homework.
