Product Description
This activity allows students to discover how different types of mutations affect the protein produced. Students will transcribe and translate 6 different DNA sequences by forming the mRNA strand and accompanying amino acid sequence. They will then compare these sequences to investigate mutations. Mutations included in this activity include point, missense, nonsense, frame shift, insertion, deletion, and silent mutations. The follow up questions allow students to make connections between mutation type and its severity. This activity will also serve as practice in using a codon chart. Allow your student to have some fun investigating mutations, while practicing what they already know. This downloadable resource provides teacher directions, student activity sheet, and teacher answer key.
