Solving one-step equations is often one of the first activities students experience as variables are included in equations. These problems are of the form x + a = b, where a and b can be any positive or negative rational number. I assume in this activity that students can add or subtract improper fractions and decimal fractions.
Specific Common Core language is included on Page 1.
These problems can be used as an classroom activity or as an assessment. When using as an activity, I often project problems on a white board and have students demonstrate solutions.
If given as an assessment, my policy is "No story = No Credit." My example shows what I look for when assessing a student's work.
Look for similar but progressively more complex equations, including word problems.
