Introduce open number lines with this animated PowerPoint. Students will learn how to hop by 1s, 5s, and 10s on a number line to create one digit numbers and two digit numbers. Hopping to a target number is a foundation strategy for place value.
First the PowerPoint introduces number lines and demonstrates how to hop by 1s and 5s. Then students play Beat the Clock on a worksheet for one digit numbers. My students were super excited whenever they finished their number line before the animation. (I told them to see if they could hop faster than the frog. :)
Then, students are introduced to hopping to two digit numbers using 10s, 5s, and 1s. A connection is made between the number line and place value rod and unit blocks. Then, students play Beat the Clock on the back of the worksheet for two digit numbers.
