Teaching POETRY and need to foster student engagement? Want a cohesive intro to poetry unit (2 weeks) with a detailed teacher key?
The following resource includes four awesomely-amazing poems by Billy Collins, Stephen Dunn, Marianne Moore, and Charles Bukowski that get students thinking about the purpose and function of poetry. In a world where poetry is often not revered, the first step is to get students thinking about why they are reading poetry.
Each poem is followed by a question prompting deeper literary analysis. The culminating assignment asks students to synthesize the four complementary poems to define poetry and its purpose in society.
I use this for a dual credit college poetry class - suitable for A.P. or high school students.
A thorough answer key that explicates each of the four poems will save you LOTS of time and planning!
