I have used Billy Collins' charming poem "Introduction to Poetry" for several years now to kick off our study of poetry. It is absolutely perfect -- accessible, and yet full of imagery and figurative language. Most importantly, Collins has an important point to make about how we should approach poetry. His tongue-in-cheek poem makes clear the dangers of forcing meanings out of poetry, before we take the time to enjoy it! Students love this poem. And you can refer to it all year! My questions and graphic organizer guide students through the process in a relaxed and enjoyable manner.
