This unit on polynomials provides everything you need to run the unit. Just add algebra tiles and the formative assessment strategies of your choice and you will have a complete unit with guided student notes, student self-assessment, two quizzes, and one unit exam.

The unit covers modelling using algebra tiles (don’t worry – it’s all explained in the notes if you need to learn how to use algebra tiles) and translating between algebra tiles and symbolic representation. I also include two or three methods for adding and subtracting polynomials allowing student to choose methods that work for them – this is great built in differentiation.

This unit was created under the Western Canadian Standards for Math (BC, AB, SK, MB and others follow this curriculum) using the McGraw Hill Ryerson text “Mathlinks 9” so in class work will need to be adjusted if you have a different text (or no text at all) in your class.

The specific outcome covered in this unit (according to US Common Core) is:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.APR.A.1 – Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.

The specific outcomes covered in this unit (according to Western Canada) are:

Patterns and Relations 5.
Demonstrate an understanding of polynomials (limited to polynomials of degree less than or equal to 2). [C, CN, R, V]
Patterns and Relations 6. Model, record and explain the operations of addition and subtraction of polynomial expressions, concretely, pictorially and symbolically (limited to polynomials of degree less than or equal to 2). [C, CN, PS, R, V]*

A note on the unit exam

The unit exam is formatted similar to standardised exams to give students some practice with that format before they reach a high stakes assessment. I recommend you do some practice questions in this format if you have never given a “standardized style” assessment to your students before.
