This is a very engaging, though-provoking activity to get students to think about the nature of science. Some topics include: theory, hypothesis, evidence, conclusions, discussions, and collaboration. This lesson can be used for grades 6-12.
Students will read this story in pairs. Collaboratively with their partner, they will create a theory how Mr. Norton died based on the evidence presented. Students will write this theory on the back of their paper. Students will then present their theory to the rest of the class. A class discussion will ensue afterwards. There will be no "correct answer" to this activity. Students should clearly see that many theories can be created based on a set of evidence.
This lesson will last approximately 1 hour.
