I'm entering my 3rd year of teaching, and I've realized something: many students, at least at my school, are forced to read Shakespeare, but they aren't told why they have to. Many students have no idea how awesome Shakespeare is! During my first year, I put together this presentation that allows kids to see why reading Shakespeare is important and can be fulfilling. This is a great introduction to any Shakespeare play. I usually set up different stations as an introduction to Shakespeare and whatever play we are reading. This could also be done as whole class lecture. Several slides include links to relevant YouTube videos that show how Shakespeare is all around us.
This PowerPoint includes:
-General Biographical Information about William Shakespeare
-General Information about The Globe Theater
-Examples in Pop Culture that show how Shakespeare's plays are still adapted or referenced
-Explanations and examples as to why and how Shakespeare is still popular today
-Link to a documentary that has celebrities and students discussing Shakespeare
