One of my favorite units of the school year is teaching A Midsummer Night's Dream to my students! When they first hear the name Shakespeare, however, students do not always feel the same way. Therefore, I include many engaging activities within the unit to help them to connect to Shakespeare and take my time introducing the Bard to my students the first day.
This is a powerpoint that offers a brief glimpse into the life and times of William Shakespeare. I have also included pictures of Stratford-Upon-Avon from my own travels. It takes about 30 minutes to teach.
Teaching suggestion for full class lesson: I start each class will a KWL chart on Shakespeare. From there, I pass out a Shakespeare Scavenger Hunt (also sold in my TPT store) and instruct students to look for the answers during class and after school. I then go through the powerpoint and finish class with the hilarious youtube video, "Shakespeare, Brief and Naughty."
It is an interactive and quite engaging class that packs a plethora of information about Shakespeare into a 50 minute period.
I highly recommend providing the corresponding Shakespeare Scavenger Hunt to students to use as guided notes along with this powerpoint:
